In an exclusive interview with The5%ers, funded trader Ellis opened up about his trading journey, disciplined strategy, and the mindset that helped him achieve consistent profitability, all while living and trading abroad.
Originally from the UK and currently residing in Malaysia, Ellis has been trading for nearly three years. Over the past year and a half, he has been a funded trader, most recently joining The5%ers, where he continues to build on his success.
Like many new traders, Ellis began with trading signals, a path that quickly proved unsustainable. “I realized early on that signals didn’t work,” he shared. “That’s when I decided to join a trading community and build my own strategy. It changed everything.”

Today, his strategy is rooted in simplicity and structure. He focuses on just four currency pairs and combines higher time frame structure with lower time frame confirmations. His trading approach is built around patience, precision, and clear technical setups. One of the biggest rewards of trading, Ellis says, is the freedom it offers.
“It’s a pretty cool experience, especially when you start realizing you can do this consistently. Once your system is set up, it gives you a real sense of freedom — being able to work whenever and wherever you want,” he said.
His most recent trade — a setup on GBP/USD — earned him 5.8% profit with a single high-probability entry. For Ellis, trading isn’t about volume; it’s about quality. Some months, he may take just one trade, but he sticks to his tested process.
When asked about the toughest psychological challenge in trading, Ellis emphasized the pressure of needing to trade to pay bills. “The best thing I did was not relying on trading for income early on. I had remote jobs, which gave me the freedom to trade without pressure,” he said.
His advice to new traders? “Don’t quit your job right away. Focus on learning, building consistency, and, if possible, find work that allows you to trade. Success comes from patience and discipline, not rushing the process.”
